Why Asking Google for Plumbing Prices Can Cost You More in the End

One of the most common questions people ask Google, AI, and online search engines today is:

"How much does it cost to replace a water heater?"

While it sounds like a simple question, it's almost impossible to answer accurately online.

The problem isn't Google or AI. The problem is that neither can see the conditions in your home.

They don't know:

  • The condition of your existing water heater
  • Whether your shut-off valves work
  • If your gas line is up to current standards
  • Whether your venting is safe
  • If earthquake straps need replacement
  • Whether an expansion tank is required
  • If there are existing code or safety concerns

Because of this, online pricing is often based on assumptions—not reality.

What Is Included in the Installation?

Many homeowners think replacing a water heater is simply disconnecting the old one and connecting the new one.

At Valley Plumbing, we look at the entire system.

A typical installation may include:

  • New water supply connections
  • New gas shut-off valve
  • New water shut-off valve
  • New earthquake straps
  • Expansion tank installation
  • Venting corrections or replacement
  • Gas drip leg installation
  • Water heater drip pan installation (when possible)
  • Reconnection of the temperature and pressure relief line
  • System testing and safety checks

We also verify that hot water reaches fixtures throughout the home and take the time to show you how your new water heater operates.

In some cases, additional repairs may be needed, such as replacing a recirculation pump or correcting existing plumbing deficiencies.

Every home is different.

The Same Applies to Toilets and Faucets

The same issue exists when asking:

  • "How much does it cost to install a toilet?"
  • "How much does it cost to replace a faucet?"

The answer depends on what is found after the old fixture is removed.

A toilet replacement may uncover a damaged flange, leaking shut-off valve, or floor damage.

A faucet replacement may reveal corroded supply lines, failing angle stops, or water pressure issues.

Without seeing the existing conditions, any online price is simply an estimate.

The Better Question to Ask

Instead of asking:

"How much does it cost?"

Ask:

"What is included in the installation?"

That's where the real value is found.

A low advertised price may not include many of the items needed to complete the job properly. Sometimes those items are added later, resulting in a final bill much different than what was advertised online.
